A slight delay in timings to get this out there as the TM team at HQ have been working on event numero II especially for you. Here is our 20+10 best of 2010. I didn’t come up with that as a catchphrase it’s just there was so many good albums out there from last year, that 20 or 10 just wouldn’t be enough. This year our winners were Salem with their dark, forward thinking ‘witch house’ album King Night. I asked Paul Hanford our HQ music wizz to describe Salem’s new album in a few words: ‘Voodoo electronics, sustained mood, the ambience of early Sabbath relocated to the deepest, darkest american backwaters. Salem fashion an intensity and beauty out of the simplest forms making them the most intriguing act of the year.’
We’re also really sorry Rihanna didn’t make it into the list, although Rude Boy was the track of the year, the album came out in 2009. We still love you.

Gayngs, From out of New Orleans famous Project Magnolia? or ‘Straight Outta Compton’?. No this isn’t a fresh outa jail Percy Miller signing like Soulja Slim but rather a Minneapolis based 10CC inspired supergroup. When Ryan Olson had the idea of joining forces with Solid Gold’s Zach Coulter, Adam Hurlburt, and Shön Troth he had no idea what would happen next…25 talented but very different musicians collaborating together in Justin Vernon of Bon Iver’s Wisconsin studio ‘April Base’. Yes! The birth of a retro yet contemporary sound. Brilliance in a world where perfection doesn’t exsist but a perfect musical family, Gayngs.
With airy, dreamy vocals, 70’s style psych slide guitars, jazz sax from Michael Lewis (Andrew Bird) and the retro pop of Lookback combined with Justin Vernons welcoming forsetto. Gayngs had the early demos ready of their first single ‘The Gaudy Side of Town.’ But Olson didnt stop there, next he bought in rapper P.O.S but not for his normal conscious hip hop vocals but instead a ‘Soul-inspired tenar.’
About 8 musicians later Gayngs was complete to work on the album ‘Relayted’. Track 3 on the album is a song called ‘Cry’ which is a rework of Kevin Godley and Creme’s hit version in 1985.
Welcome them in spring 2011, rumour says that Justin Vernon has even been working with Rick Rubin and Nicki Minaj.

We love El Guincho here at Tago Mago HQ. Check out Bombay.
